Why is descriptive language important?  Let's play this game to find out.

What descriptive language did you use to tell your parents about your day today?  Majed, did you tell your mum your day was as awesome as Joe Morris?

Today we are going to start reading Onion Tears together, to find out whether any of our ideas are rights.

Before we begin, we need to have a quick think about these literary devices:

  • A simile is .... "using like or as:  as white as snow"
  • A metaphor is ....  "a comparison: you are a pig"
  • Personification is ....  "using human qualities to describe something non-human: lightening lashed out with anger"
During the unit we are going to write a description of one of the characters in Onion Tears, using metaphors and similes.  It would be great to have some of those descriptions on our blog.

At home tonight, you might want to have a look at this video to see how similes and metaphors are used in pop music.

Today 6 Emerald started to look at Onion Tears.
After looking at the front cover, we thought:
  • the book might be about a goose named Onion Tears
  • sometimes when you cut onions, you cry
  • it might be about a girl who cries a lot
After looking at the back cover, we thought:
  • the birds called swallows might be important
  • there might be birds flying across their country every summer
  • the girl is probably from South East Asia
After looking at the acknowledgements on the back of the first page, we thought:
  • the girl might be travelling by boat from South East Asia
We learned a bit about Vietnam:
  • it is a very old country, and is in South East Asia
  • it has experienced many wars, the most recent from 1964-1975
  • many refugees fled from Vietnam after the recent war
  • it has many religious beliefs, including Christianity
  • it has about 75 million people (Australia has 23 million people)

We watched a youtube clip of Anh Do speaking about his boat journey from Vietnam.

Mrs Emeleus suggested we might like to watch another youtube clip to help us understand the background of the girl in Onion Tears.  In this video, a man, Nam Nguyen, is interviewed by his son, Ryan, about Nam's boat journey from Vietnam when he was 12.

  7. I hope you all like reading, and thinking about books. Not all books are fantastic, but many are, and I agree with Charbel K that Onion Tears is an interesting book.
